The Streak Continues: FURY Win 9 In a Row

In a clash between two playoff bound teams the FURY (11-1-0) were looking to leap-frog Toronto into first place against the slumping Laval Cometes (7-4-1). Fury newcomer Lisa-Marie Woods proved her value all evening long. Despite a scoreless first half Woods was all over the pitch creating chance for the FURY. The first half ended with the FURY back on their heels struggling to find their game.
The second half saw an entirely different FURY squad that was aggressivley pushing forward and in the 57th minute Woods did what all newcomers want to do and that is score in her FURY debut with a great run forwarding cutting inside the back defender and beat the keeper with a lovely left-footed strike. The entire FURY team could feel the weight lifted off their back and seemed to settle into their truly effective possession game and were rewarded again with strong pressure attacking the Laval defense. On a Anna Caniglia corner she picked out an unmarked Danielle Johnson who jumped up into the fray notching her first goal of the season and giving the FURY a critical two goal lead.
With the lead FURY head coach Craig Smith began making his changes which proved effective as substitution Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke scored her second goal in as many games in the 84th minute capping off an impressive second half for the FURY.
The win places the FURY two points ahead of second place Toronto and with 4 points in their final two games the FURY can lock up a 5th consecutive division title. Should the FURY be victorious in the final two match and FC Indiana draws or losses their final match to Chicago the FURY would win the Central Conference.

FURY Haunt Phantoms

With each game the Ottawa FURY Men take another critical step forward in securing their first post-season birth. On Wednesday night the FURY (8-3-3) not only did so with a victory, but sent a message to the rest of the teams in the playoff picture that they are a true contender with a convincing 7-0 trouncing of the New Hampshire Phantoms (3-8-4).

The game started off with some strong pressure from both sides, but it looked as though the Phantoms were convinced to play a defense-first style of game. In the 23rd minute Florian DeCamp broke the deadlock with a highlight-reel goal controlling the ball at the top of the penalty area and showing his accuracy firing a top cornered shot over leaping keeper Tim Murray. The score remained 1-0 heading into the dressing room at half with the FURY owing a strong portion of the play.

The second half presented an entirely different display from the FURY as the came at New Hampshire in wave after wave of attack. The FURY struck in the 53rd minute as Paul Kihara's speed was no match for the Phantoms defense or sprawling keeper Tim Murray giving the FURY a 2-0 lead. Moments later will Beaugé notched his 7th goal of the season making it 3-0 and with flood gates open Martin Vickerton made in 4-0 on an outstanding left-footed free kick curling it low around the wall and inside the near post. With Vickerton's goal head coach Stephen O'Kane began to make changes, but it was one of his regulars Martin John who jumped up into the rush and redirecting a perfect through-ball home making it 5-0. The rout was on! In keeping with the defensive contributions Ladi Bushiri found himself forward pressuring the Phantom defender into a turn over which he calming attacked the goal and beat the keeper low with his 4th goal of the season. Matt Pachone put the exclamation point on the match with another highlight-reel goal flicking it over the defender going outside-in on him and beating the keep to the near post solidifying a convincing FURY lashing.

The win edges the FURY one point shy of Cape Cod for the division lead and into a tie with Newark for the wild card position. Both Cape Cod and Newark have on game remaining while the FURY have two as they visit both New Hampshire (Saturday) and close out the regular season in Vermont (Sunday). The FURY require 4 points to clinch a post-season birth. A FURY victory coupled with a Cape Cod or Newark loss guarantees a playoff position.

The FURY were well supported in this match with a crowd of over 550 boisterous fans that the FURY recognized in applaud at the conclusion of the match.

FURY Keeping Pace in Playoff Picture

A day after a scoreless draw with division-leading Cape Cod the FURY (7-3-3) travelled to Rhode Island (1-9-5) for a match against a Sting Rays side that sits at the bottom of the table. FURY head coach Stephen O'Kane wasted no time playing with his line-up as he did the previous weekend in the Cape Cod-Westchester double-header. The strategy proved ideal as the FURY exemplified their offensive depth with five difference goal scorers in their 5-0 victory.

The Fury would take the lead in the 15th minute when Matt Pecheone fed Roland Tiamuh with a lovely through ball. Tiamuh rounded the keeper and slotted home. Three minutes later a long clearance by Fury keeper Michael Drozd was headed on by Tiki Gugeshe into the path of Will Beauge who shot home to put the Fury two goals up.

The Stingrays Tim Ritter had an outstanding match and almost pulled a goal back in the 29th minute but was denied by the diving Drozd. Gugushe (twice) and Tiamuh would have chances to add to the Fury lead but the teams went into half time with the score Fury 2 Rhode Island 0.

After Ritter tested Drozd again in the 60th minute, the Fury would take charge of the game. After a fine break out of defence, Justin Dasah, burst past two defenders to lash the ball into the net in a highlight reel goal. Ten minutes later Paul Kihara added a 4th from close range when fed by Gugeshe and just before the final whistle, Florian DeCamps would score the 5th Fury goal on an assist by Paul Kihara.

The win puts the FURY a mere four points behind Cape Cod for the division lead and three points behind Newark for the Wild Card position. The FURY wrap up their home season with a match against New Hampshire on Wednesday.

Division Lead Squandered in Draw

In a top of the table clash with huge playoff implications for both sides the FURY (6-3-3) drew Cape Cod (8-3-4) for a second consecutive weekend missing an invaluable opportunity to gain a critical three points in their quest for both a playoff position, but more importantly the division title.

The FURY had their chances and midway through the second half it looked as though the FURY would have a golden opportunity to break the deadlock as Paul Kihara was brought down inside the penalty area. Unfortunately Ladi Bushiri was unable to convert the penalty kick and the came eventually ended in the draw.

Despite the draw the FURY were well represented as they had support from over 200 strong as the travelling FURY youth teams took in the game and showed their passion and support for their club.

The FURY travel to Rhode Island tomorrow and look to secure a critical three points and place further press on both Cape Cod and Newark in their push for the post-season.

FURY Tame Raging Rhinos and Clinch Playoff Spot

With playoff positioning on the line for both squads the Ottawa FURY (10-1-0) entertained a depleted Rochester (5-5-1) squad that was determined to keep the FURY off the score sheet all evening long. Despite playing without any substitutions they 5-manned defensive line of Raging Rhinos were able to keep the FURY attack at bay for the first half. Jennifer Hance (pictured above) broke the scoreless draw in the 55th minute after Zoe Avner and Emma Mattson played some trickery off a free kick as Mattson found a streaking Hance who gave the FURY that needed offensive punch.
The game continued on its defensive style, but the FURY remained in complete posession coming close several time, but unable to penetrate the 5-wide Rhinos defensive strategy. Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke, however, was able to break through the defensive on a perfect through-ball which she scooted past the keep and had all evening to easily place it into the empty goal.
The game was far different than the 7-0 drubbing that the FURY handed Rochester three weeks prior, but nevertheless continue their winning ways with their 8th consecutive victory as they continue to battle with Toronto for top spot in the Nothern Division.

FURY Edge Hamilton to Retain Division Lead

The Ottawa FURY Women matched up against one of the divisions most defensively-minded squads in the Hamilton Avalanche on Sunday night. The FURY edged Hamilton 2-1 on goals by Sarah Sample and Jodie Taylor. The close score of the match is very misleading as the FURY dominated possession even after the sending off of Courtney Wetzel in the 53rd minute and a 81st minute penalty kick goal from the Avalanche.

The game started slowly but it was the Fury who settled into their possession and combination passing game which starved Hamilton of the ball. There were few clear cut chances in the opening 20 minutes of play but the Fury held the balance of play with Jodie Taylor and Shay Powell prominent in FURY attacks. In the 22nd minute Ottawa took the lead following good work from Sarah Sample who slotted in a ball behind the Avalanche defence for Jodie Taylor to score with an impudent chip off the outside of her foot. Anna Caniglia had a free kick well saved by Amy Holt before the FURY increased their lead to two in the 29th minute. Another Ottawa passing movement freed up Taylor on the right and her cross was beautifully struck on the volley past Holt in the Avalanche goal. A great piece of play from start to finish by Ottawa.
The FURY dominated the rest of the first half racking up 13 shots on goal in the half to only 2 for Hamilton and dominating possession. Sample, Taylor and Powell fed off the promptings of Rachael Axon, Courtenay Wetzel and Jennifer Hance to continuously threaten the Hamilton defence.

The game completely changed complexion in the 53rd minute when Wetzel, who two minutes earlier had been booked for unsportsmanlike behaviour, became embroiled in a tussle with Chelsea Spencer. The referee, Suzanne Morisset, issued Wetzel a second yellow card and she was ejected from the game leaving the Fury to defend their 2-0 lead with 10 men for the rest of the game. The FURY readjusted their line up and the game resumed the same pattern of play with FURY continuing to hold possession. As the half progressed the Avalanche began to throw more players forward and cracks finally began to show in the FURY armour. In the 67th minute, Heather MacDougall almost grabbed a goal for the Avalanche with a shot that just went past the post. Two minutes later. Erin Reinke was forced to make a diving save from a free kick from Greco.

Growing in confidence, the Avalanche finally broke through in the 81st minute courtesy of a penalty call. Danielle Johnson was adjudged to have pushed Kelly Heaton in the box and Greco confidently steered the penalty kick home past Reinke. The Avalanche piled on the pressure forcing the FURY to defend deep in their end against a succession of long, direct flighted balls. Anna Caniglia handles the ball on the edge of the penalty box in the 88th minute. The ensuing free kick was partially blocked by Hance and ricocheted off a Hamilton player who is felled by the ball. The FURY dig deep and are happy to simply clear their lines whenever the opportunity arises. The final whistle came as a much welcomed relief for the FURY who retain their spot at the top of the Northern Division.

The win, the seventh in succession, takes the FURY record to 9-1-0 and 27 points on the season, two points ahead of the Toronto Lady Lynx (8-1-1) and six ahead of the Laval Cometes (7-2-0).

Dasah's Hat-Trick Helps FURY Edge Flames

The FURY continued their playoff chase on Sunday with a match against the injury-ridden Westchester Flames. FURY Head Coach Stephen O'Kane fielded a line-up that was vastly different from Saturday's match against Cape Cod. The changes saw Justin Dasah insert up front and the changes appeared to provide the right spark as Dasah notched a hat-trick helping the FURY to a critical 3-2 victory.

The changes would pay great dividends for Ottawa, but they would first have to endure a long Westchester attacking spell as the Flames exposed the left flank for two good early chances. In the 8th minute Sam Bailey would collect a low cross inside the six-yard-box, but he mishit his simple tap-in and Erik Lefebvre was able to save what should have been a sure goal from point-blank range. Minutes later, the dangerous Michael Konikoff raced up the wing and cut it back for a free volley by Brian Kuritzky at the top of the 18 that sailed high to the Fury's relief.

Ottawa was under pressure, but in the 22nd minute the Fury would score what will inevitably be the easiest goal of the 2008 season. A failed through-ball that should have been an easy situation caused a mix-up between a Westchester defender and the keeper, allowing Justin Dasah to glide in, scoop up the ball and literally walk it into the net. As the Flames' keeper and defenders watched helplessly, Ottawa celebrated their first goal of the match.

Post-goal, the momentum swung greatly in favour of the Fury, but in the 37th minute against the run of play Michael Konikoff would have a moment of brilliance to even the match at 1-1. Faced with a right sided free-kick from 25 yards, Konikoff used his left to strike it around the wall and low into the bottom-left corner of the net. The goal stunned the crowd but it would be Westchester's last bright moment of the half. Both Matthew Rigby and Jamie Ramm would have golden chances in separate scrambles in the box. Rigby seeing his effort blocked while Ramm would be robbed by the keeper from a mere 4-5 yards out.

Before the half ended however, Ottawa would regain the lead. Roland Tiamuh made a sparkling run in midfield past one defender, and held off another to send a through ball to Justin Dasah who timed his run superbly and cooly slotted it past the keeper in the box. A well-worked goal, it sent the Fury deservedly up 2-1 into the dressing rooms with 45 minutes played.

The second-half would start slowly, with neither team seriously threatening until Justin Dasah once again took the game into his hands. With the Fury playing fluid passing football in the midfield, Dasah latched onto a Will Beaugé through-ball and was in alone on goal. In the same situation as the second Fury goal, this time Westchester keeper James Hilaire pulled off a great diving stop to deny Dasah. On the ensuing corner Dasah would however exact his revenge as he headed in Kenneth Caceros' cross at the far post to complete his hat-trick.

With the scoreline 3-1, Ottawa began to ring in substitutions and attempted to close the game out. Erik Lefebvre would come to Ottawa's rescue with two great saves late in the second half. From a corner, the ball would drop to Brian Kuritzky who made amends for his first-half miss by drilling a volley that was superbly saved by Lefebvre as he leaped to palm the ball away at full stretch. Seconds later Lefebvre was at it again, backpeddaling and doing very well to tip over the bar a Josh Trott chip.

Despite Lefebvre's heroics, a tense injury time was set-up by Kuritzky, who would undoubtedly score the game's best goal on 89 minutes. The Westchester player dashed up the right side, cut in past a defender across goal and blasted a left-footed curler into the top of the net in full stride from 20 yards out. Although it was a great individual effort, the goal would not be enough for Westchester as the Fury hung on in injury time for a 3-2 win.

The victory maintained Ottawa's undefeated home record, which now stands at 5-0-2. The Fury's next set of games are this weekend when they go on the road to play crucial matches against the Cape Cod Crusaders (Saturday, July 12), and the Rhode Island Stingrays (Sunday, July 13). The PDL team's final home game is on Wednesday, July 16 when the New Hampshire Phantoms visit the Algonquin College Sports Complex (kickoff 6:00 p.m.).

Powell's Hat Trick Gives FURY Division Lead

The Ottawa FURY travelled to Laval on Friday night for a match against the Cometes with huge playoff implications on the line. Tied for second in the division with Laval and trailing the Lady Lynx by a single point the FURY anticipated a tough match. Shay

Shay Powell provided the offensive punch for the FURY scoring all three goals in a 3-0 victory sending the FURY into first place in the division. The win is Ottawa's sixth in a row improving their record to 8-1-0 and remaining undefeated on the road this season.

The FURY immediately took the initiative in this much anticipated clash with the Cometes and began to play their fluid passing game making it difficult for the Cometes to gain possession or put any rhythm into their play. However for all their promising play, the FURY did not create many chances and the first 15 minutes of the game was devoid of goalmouth action. With much at stake, the game had the feeling of a playoff clash with no quarter asked or given. FURY defender Ashley Kennedy and Laval striker Aimee Legault would tussle all evening and both players were booked in the 17th minute by referee Matthieu Barclay who kept a tight rein on affairs.

There were close calls for both teams as first Jodie Taylor glided past two defenders before unleashing a tremendous long range shot which Marie-Pier Bilodeau did remarkably well to push onto the crossbar. At the other end the FURY defence got in a tangle following a dangerous Laval free kick but eventually the ball was cleared. As she has done so many times this season, Shay Powell would break the game open in the 31st minute for the FURY. Taylor did the spade work feeding Powell with a great through ball which Powell lashed past the Laval keeper with aplomb. The FURY midfield trio of Courtney Wetzel, Rachael Axon and Jennifer Hance began to take control of the game and just before half time the FURY would score a crucial second goal. This time it was Axon who provided the final pass for the speedy Powell; the in form striker did the rest shooting wide of Bilodeau to give the FURY a 2-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the FURY played perhaps their best soccer of the season with Powell and Taylor mesmerizing the Laval defence with their pace and strong running. Powell made a great run down the left wing soon after the break leaving several defenders in her wake. The chance went begging however with two FURY players waiting to convert the cross. Another Powell run left Courtney Wetzel in a one on one with keeper Bilodeau who made a fine save. Melisssa Busque threatened twice for Laval before Powell delivered the coup de grace in the 66th minute by completing her hat trick. After running past three defenders, Powell was brought down in the box and stepped up herself to dispatch the penalty kick to register her eleventh goal in nine league games.

With a three goal cushion, head coach Craig Smith rang the changes with some of the evening’s top performers including Powell, Taylor, Zoe Avner and Jennifer Hance taking a well-earned rest with Sunday’s game with Hamilton in mind. Ashley Kennedy and Anna Caniglia continued to keep a tight leash on the Laval attackers and before she left the game Powell would hit the woodwork once again. In the closing stages Sarah Sample would rattle a Laval post as the FURY closed out the game by denying the Cometes any quality possession. Erin Reinke earned the shut out for the Fury. The two teams meet again in Ottawa on July 16th.

FURY Draw Division Leading Crusaders

In a game that was without question the most important game in the FURY's season to date fans were treated to an entertaining brand of soccer. In a clash between the division leading Cape Cod Crusaders the FURY were denied the full three points after a 70th minute Martin Vickerton screamer was erased by a lovely Liam Maloney header in the 77th minute.

In front of the biggest crowd of the season (400+) it seemed as though everyone at the pitch new the high stakes of this match. The FURY are looking to catch the divsion leading Crusaders who have won the division the past five consecutive seasons. Despite the draw it was the FURY that dominated a large part of the match and both Florian DeCamp and Justin Dasah would come agonizingly close to giving the FURY the win in the dying stage of the game.

With both teams playing organized football from front to back, mistakes were few and far between. Controversy marked the end of the first-half however as Crusader keeper Evan Bush lost the ball underneath him while making a diving save from a Will Beaugé shot. Paul Kihara pounced on the bobbling ball and toed it into the net - a poacher's special. Despite protests however, the goal would be disallowed by head referee Marvin Mohring after his linesman had flagged for offside. Will Beaugé almost restored the one-goal lead in the 41st minute but saw his shot from a steep angle clank off of the base of the post and out.

With halftime long gone the FURY picked up where they left off, and Martin Vickerton would come close once again in the 51st minute with a venomous half-volley from 18 yards that just skimmed off the top of the crossbar. Cape Cod countered with a swift attacking move that saw speedy striker Lee Koaudio get behind the defence - his far-post shot bobbling across the face of goal and just inches past the upright.

The deadlock was finally broken and it was Vickerton who deservedly fired the FURY in front. Defender Janson Blake made a great overlapping run, collected the ball in the corner and put a great cross in that barely missed Florian Decamps' head. Instead it ricocheted off of a Cape Cod defender and right out to Vickerton, who smashed a left-footed shot in the top left corner from about 16 yards.Up until this point in the second-half Cape Cod had rarely threatened, but a jubilant FURY were made to pay dearly in the 77th minute for giving the Crusaders one last great chance. Cape Cod midfielder Edens Chery used his tricky footwork and skill to juke past a defender on the left side, and placed a great cross onto the penalty spot where Liam Maloney sent a pretty glancing header far post past a helpless Drozd.

The FURY outshot the Crusaders 18 to 8 and will consider themselves unfortunate not to have taken all three points in the game. Ottawa remains unbeaten at home this season with a 4-0-2 record.

FURY Appoint Academy Technical Director

The Ottawa Fury Soccer Club is pleased to announce the appointment of former Fury W-League head coach Frank Lofranco as the Technical Director of the Fury Academy.

The Fury Academy , now in it’s third year, has gradually become the program of choice for players in the U10 to U13 age group, providing an opportunity for young talented soccer players from Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec to receive high quality specialist coaching in the key development years.

“Young players more than any others need to have access to the highest standards of coaching to ensure that they have the refined technical skill set necessary to develop to their full potential”, enthused Fury CEO and owner John Pugh. “The results of the Academy program are already there for all to see and it has become vitally important to the ongoing success of Fury players, Fury teams and the long-term vision of the Club. For these reasons, the Fury is appointing a Technical Director responsible solely for the Fury Academy and what better choice than Frank Lofranco”.

Frank Lofranco is best known for establishing the Ottawa Fury Women’s Team as an elite team in the W-league with international recognition; ranked as high as seventh in the world by www.womensworldfootball.com. Over six years as head coach Lofranco had a remarkable record of 74-15-6 and led the Fury to two championship finals. He has more than 10 years experience in player development at ages from 5 through 14. He served as the first Club Head Coach of the Etobicoke Soccer Club and oversaw the introduction of player and coaching development programs for a club of more than 2,000 players. More recently as a parent, coach and technical advisor he has been working with the Cumberland United Soccer Club. As a player, Frank played in the National Soccer League (Canada), Canadian Soccer League (Canada), and American Professional Soccer League (North America) most notably for the Toronto Blizzard SC and Toronto Italia SC and represented Canada in the 1987 Pan-American Games.

“This is a progressive step for the Ottawa Fury Academy and one that I am very proud to be a part of. The opportunity to guide the development of top players between the ages of 10 and 13 is incredibly exciting and a responsibility I take very seriously,” commented Lofranco, “The Ottawa Fury is a club that I am obviously familiar with. The Fury is clearly a leader in reinventing soccer programming in Canada and I fully expect the Academy to serve as a leading example in player development.”

Planting a seed for future initiatives, Lofranco added that “The Ottawa soccer community seems to be moving in the right direction and I can see that local clubs are working hard to provide our region’s youngest players with quality programs. I have seen this first hand as a volunteer coach with Cumberland United S.C. In my new role with the Fury, I hope to reach out to local clubs and establish relationships that can help provide improved opportunities for the development of young players.”

The Fury Academy is an integral part of the Fury Player Development Program; using a model adopted by many leading professional clubs, the program emphasizes a bottom up approach whereby players graduate from an Academy program where the emphasis is on fundamental technical and skills development through to an environment in which competitive league play (Super Y-League) is introduced as part of an integrated development program. During these years, players will also have the opportunity to participate in national, provincial and regional identification programs and in the latter years to showcase their talents to US and Canadian collegiate coaches. At the highest levels, the women's W-League and the men's Premier Development League provide opportunities to play senior level soccer in a professionalized environment and also provide a stepping stone toward representative and professional play.

FURY Player's Honoured

Anna Caniglia (top) and Ladi Bushiri (bottom) were both named to their League's respective 'Team of the Week. Caniglia received the honour from the W-League with her goal and assist in the FURY's match against the Hamilton Avalanche while Bushiri received the honour for his powerfully headed goal against Long Island couple with his strong defensive player in the FURY's back four. Congratulations to the both you!

FURY Pick Up Three Valuable Points Against Voltage

The FURY Men improved their record to 5-3-1 and remain undefeated at home with a valuable 4-2 victory over the Vermont Voltage on Wednesday night.

All four FURY goals came in the first half of play with Florian DeCamp leading the way with two while Will Beaugé and Martin John chipped in with one each. The win not only moved the FURY into contention for the wild card playoff spot, but edged them closer to division leading Cape Cod.

The FURY were encouraged all evening long with a boisterous crowd supporting the home side led by many of the FURY Youth Clubs that play out of the SYL. The home-side advantage certainly seemed evident as the FURY were controlling the game on all areas of the pitch.

The game became more physical in the closing stages with several yellow cards being shown. Drozd had to work hard to maintain the shutout saving well from Daniel Stevens. Kihara and Beauge both went close before some sloppy defending opened the door for a Voltage comeback. First, in the 81st minute, Stevens was dragged down in the box and from the ensuing penalty, Stevens took the kick himself and put the Voltage on the scoreboard. The Fury got caught napping in the 85th minute when substitute Bernouni Nassim was given time to fire a low shot pass Drozd in the Fury net to make the score 4-2. The Fury regained their composure and were able to see out the remainder of the game without further incident.

FURY Remain Unbeaten on Road Defeating Hamilton 3-1

The Ottawa FURY continued 5-game long road trip with their second last stop in Hamilton against the defensive minded Avalanche. Coming into the game the Avalanche had allowed a mere 6 goals, however they had only scored 11. With first place off the division in their sights the FURY netted 3 goals against the stingy Hamilton defense extending their winning streak to 5.

It was Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke's second half marked that put the FURY up two and would prove to be the game winning goal. Anna Caniglia opened the scoring for the FURY in the first half while Ashly Kennedy help restore the two-goal FURY lead after Hayley Marler tallied for the Avalanche. The FURY will face the Avalanche in one week, but will first face the Laval Cometes in Laval on Friday night in a match-up that huge playoff implications.

Stingrays Hold FURY to 1-1 Draw

In a game that featured high winds and bouts of rain, the Ottawa FURY PDL squad braved the elements to tie the Rhode Island Stingrays 1-1 this past Sunday at the Algonquin College Sports Complex. A grinding midfield affair with heavy tackles and numerous foul saw Will BeaugĂ© come to the FURY’s rescue in the 55th when he managed to score after a scramble in the Rhode Island penalty area. The goal came a mere minute after the Stingrays had initially taken the lead, and gave Ottawa a deserved share of the points. The FURY’s next game is Wednesday, July 2 against the Vermont Voltage, kick-off 6:30 p.m. at the Algonquin College Sports Complex.

The FURY started strongly with Florian Decamps picking up where he left off after his Saturday goal versus Long Island. Decamps did well to get his head to a 2nd-minute free-kick from Andrew Rigby, but unfortunately put the effort straight into the arms of the keeper. The FURY forward was at it again minutes later when he charged up the right hand side of the penalty area and fired a low shot that hit the base of the post with the keeper stranded. After the initial flurry, Rhode Island and Ottawa seemed content to sit back and trade attacks, the best chance once again coming through Decamps as he latched onto a Janson Blake long-ball, but placed his chip high and wide over an advancing keeper.

The FURY’s first-half scare came when Rhode Island put together a smooth three-pass combination in midfield that ended in a semi-breakaway for striker Tim Ritter. Ottawa’s back-line reacted well however and Jamie Ramm made a crucial interception right as the shot was about to be taken.

Controversy surrounded the end of the first-half as in the 42nd minute the speedy Will Beaugé outran a Rhode Island defender to control a through ball. As he made his way into the box with only the keeper to beat, Beaugé clashed feet with the final Stingrays defenceman who had run behind him. Players protested vigorously and Beaugé lay on the ground in pain but referee Joe Audi waved away strong appeals for a penalty.

The second-half began with thunder audible in the distance. With neither team creating any kind of substantial chances it came as a surprise in the 54th minute when the ever-dangerous Tim Ritter was sent through free on goal and placed a sublime chip over the outstretched arms of onrushing FURY keeper Michael Drozd. The goal was one of the few clear-cut chances for Rhode Island on the evening but they took full advantage to go up 1-0. Immediately on the restart however, the FURY took it to Rhode Island and after hitting the post, Will Beaugé got his goal by slotting the ball into the net after a wild scramble in the box.

The game temporarily came to life, and Paul Kihara nearly gave Ottawa the lead after he came within inches of flicking in an off-target Florian Decamps volley. The newly-introduced Tokelo Gugushe also tested the keeper with a great cut-in and shot after a run up the left side of the area.

Similar to the first half, the full-time whistle would blow surrounded by controversy. As the FURY poured on pressure in the final minutes, a corner was cleared by the Stingrays to about 20-yards from net where midfielder Steve Kowlessar fired a piledriver past the keeper at full stretch. A stunning goal and the jubilant celebrations were short-lived however as referee Audi blew the whistle to stop play – claiming an Ottawa foul had occurred before the shot.

Neither team threatened seriously after the disallowed goal and the final score would be Ottawa FURY 1, Rhode Island Stingrays 1.

FURY extend Winning-Streak to 4 Games

The Ottawa FURY continue to find their form as they extend their winning-streak to 4 games with a convincing 5-1 victory over the London Gryphon's allowing the FURY to maintain pace with Laval and Toronto atop the division standings.
In the victory the FURY had five different goal scorers exemplifying the true depth of the FURY roster from the front to the back end. Goals from Powell, Hance, Kennedy, McCormack and Sample highlighted the powerful offensive punch that this squad possesses. Shay Powell's goals is now her 8th in seven games this season as she leads her team in both goals (8) and points (16).
The FURY's road trip continues on Sunday against the defensive juggernaut Hamilton Avalanche who have conceded a measly 6 goals this season, however they have only been able to muster 11.

FURY Kick-Off 5-Game Home Stand with Big Win

Looking to improve on a 3-3-0 record the Ottawa FURY kicked off a 5-game home stand against the Long Island Rough Riders. The FURY used the home-side advantage to produce a 3-0 victory. Goals from Martin Vickerton, Ladi Bushiri (pictured left) and Florian DeCamp was ample support for the FURY back four who contained the Rough Rider attack.
The Fury started the game on the offensive and almost went ahead in the 2nd minute when Justin Dasah nearly scored from a corner kick when his forceful header was cleared off the line by the Rough Riders defence. A let off for the Rough Riders but one that was short lived as the Fury would take the lead in the 6th minute. Following a hand ball infraction, Martin Vickerton lashed his free kick into the goal with his left foot. The kick seemed to take a minor deflection but the goal was rightly credited to Vickerton. The Fury continued to take the game to the Rough Riders and they created as series of good opportunities; Vickerton went close on two occasions from free kicks and a Florian Decscamps header also narrowly missed the mark.

With the Fury unable to capitalize on their chances, the Rough Riders grew in confidence as the half progressed. The Fury were fired a warning signal when slack play in the middle of the park led to a breakdown and a clear strike on goal for Rough Rider Mike Todd. Fury keeper Michael Drozd was alert and came out quickly to deflect the shot away. The Rough Riders pressed hard and Jamie Ramm almost conceded an own goal as he protected the Fury goal and minutes later the Fury were thankful to see a goal bound shot deflected over the bar from a Riders corner kick. Florian Decamps almost scored from a Vickerton free kick in the 31st minute and four minutes later another dead ball situation led to the second Fury goal. This time it was Andrew Rigby who set up the powerful Ladi Bushiri to score with an unstoppable header into the back of the net. The Fury led by two at the half.

The second half started quietly but Long Island slowly gained the ascendancy and garnered most of thye possession. It would be the Fury who would break the second half deadlock in the 77th minute when Matt Pecheone threw a great dummy to allow Florian Descamps to meet a low cross from Will Beauge and score with a firm shot from close in. A 3-0 lead for the Fury and one that the Rough Riders would not look like overturning. Both sides created chances as the game closed but no goals ensued and the Fury took home three valuable points. The Fury defence of Brando Morse, Bushiri, Jamie Ramm and Martin John were steady throughout the game and never allowed the Rough Riders to develop any sustained attacks.

The Fury record improved to 4-3-0 who have now won all three PDL home games so far this season. The shutout belonged to Fury keeper Michael Drozd.

TAYLOR Named W-League Player of the Week

It did not take England U23 international Jodie Taylor long to get off the mark after her late arrival due to exams at Oregon State University. The Birkenhead, England native netted three goals for the Ottawa FURY Women over the weekend and was today named W-League Player of the Week by the United Soccer Leagues. The second year FURY player notched one of the seven goals against Rochester last Saturday but her most valuable contribution was two second half goals which helped the FURY topple the previously unbeaten Toronto Lady Lynx 3-2 in Toronto. She has quickly formed a formidable striking partnership with Shay Powell (7 goals in 6 games) for the FURY. Taylor has rewritten the record books at Oregon State where she is the only OSU player ever to have earned All-Pacific-10 Conference first team honors four years running. She is the OSU career record holder in goals and points and the first OSU player to record over 100 points in a career. In 78 career appearances, Taylor recorded 47 goals, 19 assists and 113 points. This weekend, Taylor will be looking to add to her tally as the FURY are in Southern Ontario to play the London Gryphons on Saturday afternoon and the Hamilton Avalanche on Sunday afternoon

FURY Hand Lady Lynx First Loss of Season

Avenging a 2-1 loss to the Lady Lynx in the second week of the season which ended the FURY's 21-game unbeaten streak the FURY handed Toronto their first loss of the season by a 3-2 count thanks in large part to Jodie Taylor )pictured left) who scored two very crucial goals for the FURY in her first full week back with the Club upon the completion of her exams.

Ottawa, looking to build on the their 7-0 win over the Rochester Rhinos the previous evening, settled the quicker of the two teams and in form striker Shay Powell quickly carved out two chances for herself in the 7th and 13th minutes. The FURY would take the lead when Jennifer Hance headed in a corner kick from Courtney Wetzel in the 14th minute of play. Lightning caused play to be halted in the 21st minute and the players retreated to the dressing rooms for a period of 20 minutes before play was able to restart. Powell had a shot saved by Elise Kuhar-Pitters in the Lynx goal after 27 minutes and three minutes later shot wide from an Anna Caniglia corner kick. The break seemed to disrupt the FURY more than the Lynx and they went close when Brittany Bisnott shot over the bar when well-placed. The Lynx would equalize in the 37th minute when Oni Bernard shot past Erin Reinke on a feed from Stefani Morra. Julie Bazi had a free kick well saved by Erin Reinke just before the interval and the two teams went into the break tied at one goal apiece.

The second half saw the FURY take the lead after two minutes when the Jodie Taylor broke through on the right hand side and scored with a fine cross hot past Elise Kuhar-Pitters. The FURY had taken control of the game at this point playing possession soccer with Sari Raber and Powell both getting shots on target. Nicole Markowitz lobbed the ball over the FURY bar from a corner kick in the 52nd minute in an isolated Lynx attack. It was Taylor who broke the game open in the 63rd minute when she caught out Lynx keeper Kuhar-Pitters on a high shot; the keeper got her hands to the ball but was unable to prevent it entering the net. With a two goal cushion, the FURY retained control of the game but Tessa Dimitrakopoulos fired a warning shot just wide on the 70th minute mark. The FURY were not put under any sustained pressure by the Lynx but in the 90th minute the Lynx were awarded a free kick from 25 yards out after a foul by Ashly Kennedy. This time Tessa Dimitrakopoulos would make no mistake with a fine shot into the top corner. The FURY endured a few anxious moments in added time but they closed out the game deserving of their 3-2 win.

The win takes the FURY record to 5-1-0 and 15 points on the season while the division leading Lynx drop to 7-1-1 and 22 points. The FURY Women go on the road again next weekend visiting the London Gryphons on Saturday afternoon and the Hamilton Avalanche on Sunday afternoon

FURY Fall to Division-Leading Crusaders

One night removed from a 4-1 victory, the FURY found themselves on the losing end of that same score falling to the division-leading Cape Cod Crusaders. Despite the margin of defeat players and coaches are adamant that the score was not a reflection of the FURY's play rather the result of having to open in the latter stages of the second half to get back in the game.

The Crusaders got off to the perfect start in the contest when Liam Maloney headed home a Joel Theissen corner in the 17th minute of play. The home side then had several opportunities to double their advantage before the interval as the Canadian opposition struggled to deal with the pace of wide midfielder Edens Chery.

University of New Mexico forward Wright came alive in the 71st minute as he slammed home the Crusaders second goal from the middle of the penalty box. The tall forward then notched his second goal as he put the finishing touches to a tremendous run and cross from Edens Chery and put the home side up 3-0.

The visiting Fury grabbed a late consolation from William Beauge but Matt Narode quickly restored the three goal advantage as he slammed one home from close range in stoppage time.

The FURY will now head home for a lengthy home stand of 5 games beginning against the Long Island Rough Riders.

FURY Men Quell Stingrays 4-1 in Rhode Island

The FURY picked up their third consecutive PDL victory last night in Providence, Rhode Island when they defeated the Stingrays 4-1 in PDL play. The win takes the FURY to 3-2-0 on the season and sets up a crucial match with the Cape Cod Crusaders on Sunday on the Cape.
The FURY took a three goal advantage into the half-time break after Ladi Bushiri put the Fury ahead form the penalty spot in the 18th minute and Paul Kihara and Matt Pecheone added to the lead in the 36th and 45th minutes. Jeffrey Gonzalves hit back for the Stingrays three minutes after the break but Kenny Caceros restored the FURY’s three goal cushion in the 76th minute.
The FURY record improved to 3-2-0 while the Stingrays fell to 0-6-3. The Fury were outshot by the Stingrays 14 to 12.

Ottawa Unleashes FURY on Rhinos

The Ottawa FURY continued on their winning ways with an absolutely thrashing of the Rochester Rhinos by a 7-0 count. The home loss marks Rochester's first home loss of the season and has allowed the FURY to keep pace with both Laval and Toronto who they are chasing down atop the division table.
The FURY made a fast start with leading scorer Shay Powell latching onto a through ball form Jennifer Hance and blasting a great shot past Joy McKenzie in the Rhinos goal in the third minute of play. The red hot Powell has now scored in every one of Ottawa’s first five games and took her season tally to seven. The FURY continued their onslaught with Jodie Taylor missing a good chance in the 4th minute. Two minutes later however, they would double their lead when Courtney Wetzel volleyed home a cross from Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke. The game settled after this furious start and while the FURY held the upper hand in shots and possession, they would not increase their lead until the 42nd minute when Jennifer Hance headed home from Anna Caniglia.
In the second half, the FURY would score four further goals to run out 7-0 winners. In the 56th minute Taylor made a fine run down the left before feeding Wetzel for her second goal of the evening. Taylor would add a marker of her own in the 65th minute and Anna Caniglia would score number six following a corner kick. Coach Craig Smith, with one eye on Sunday’s top of the table clash with division leading Toronto, substituted freely in the second half and the scoring was rounded out when Christina Julien shot past McKenzie in the 87th minute.
The FURY outshot the Rhinos 19 to 7 with Erin Reinke picking up the shutout for Ottawa. The FURY (now 4-1-0) continue their road trip with an afternoon game against the unbeaten Toronto Lady Lynx (7-0-1) at Varsity Stadium in Toronto on Sunday. The FURY will be looking to redress a 2-1 loss to the Lynx in Ottawa last weekend.

Powell puts FURY back on Winning Track

Shay Powell (pictured left) netted the first three FURY (3-1-0) goals while, Co-Captain, Jennifer Hance added the fourth in a 4-0 victory over the Vermony Voltage (0-8-0) in a continuous downpour at the Algonquin Soccer Complex Wednesday night.
The first 15 minutes saw both teams battling for control in the middle field in the wet conditions, but Shay Powell, as she has done so often this season, changed the shape of the game with a goal in the 17th minute converting on an excellent through ball from Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke. To no surprise the extremely wet conditions played a factor and to Powell's luck in the 28th minute her shot from 18-yards out was only half stopped by Voltage keeper Catherine Cadieux and Powell had her second goal of the half. Just before half Vermont striker Akamse Nadage was involved in a colllision at midfield suffering a leg injury which required outside medical attention. After a considerable delay the half was completed and the FURY took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.

On the restart the FURY took to the Voltage quickly and Shay Powell netted the hat-trick in style roofing an Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke cross. With a commanding lead it allowed FURY coach Craig Smith to ensure his substitutes saw action. Smith inserted U23 England International Jodie Taylor seeing her first action with the FURY this season upon the completion of her studies at Oregon State. Taylor made an immediate impact and in the 60th minute Taylor made the best of Zoe Avner cross with a clever reverse pass to Jennifer Hance who pound a shot into the top-right from 8-yards out putting the final touches on a convincing FURY victory. The Voltage put together two late chances, but FURY keeper Erin Reinke ensured the clean sheet in her first action of the season. The FURY outshot Vermont by an 11-2 count.

The FURY travel to Rochester on Saturday and head to Toronto on Sunday for a rematch against the undefeated and division leading Lynx as the FURY look to redress last weekend's 2-1 loss. The FURY are on the road for the next three weeks before returning home July 6th versus the Hamilton Avalanche.

FURY Strike Down Voltage

The Ottawa FURY (2-2-0) picked up their second consecutive home victory in four days to improve their record to 2-2-0 with a convincing 5-2 victory over the Vermont Voltage (2-5-1). The FURY had contributions from five different goals scorers in an a relentless attack that Vermont had great difficulty containing. Will Beaugé (goal pictured left) scored the fifth and final FURY goal in a dominating second half of play.

For the second consecutive game it was Paul Kihara that put the FURY on the score sheet first as he capitalized on some strong defensive pressure forcing a turnover inside the box and he calmly beat a helpless John Stubbins for the games first goal (8th minute). Minutes later after continued pressure FURY Captain Jamie Ramm powerfully headed an Andrew Rigby corner giving the FURY a 2-0 lead after only 14 minutes. The Voltage would cut the deficit in half at the 31 minute mark as Bosco Cupar converted on a free kick bending it around the wall with FURY keeper Eric Lefebvre having little chance. Just before half Andrew Rigby, who played a very strong game in the FURY midfield, and a goal-bound shot stopped by a Voltage defender's hand which ultimately led to both a red card for the defender and a FURY penalty kick. Ladi Bushiri, who was clutch all game in the defensive end, calmly fired the ball into the top left corner restoring the 2 goal FURY lead. To the FURY's surprise the reduced Voltage squad continued to press in injury time and were awarded with a late goal from Darko Kolic giving the Voltage some added life heading into the dressing room.

Through the second half it became quite visible that the FURY were playing against a 10-man squad as they made every opportunity to exploit the missing Voltage player in all areas of the field. Florian DeCamps converted in the 56 minute of a mishandled Andrew Rigby cross making it 4-2. Eight minutes later FURY substitute Tiago Dalboni was fouled outside the box after a strong run down the left side. Andrew Rigby curled the ball into the box where Will Beaugé, who was very visible up front all game for the FURY, convert on his first goal of the season. The fifth and final goal removed all energy from the Voltage and the FURY took complete control for the remainder of the half. The physical intensity heightened as the half wore on predominantly due to some frustration on behalf of some Voltage veterans, but cooler heads prevailed and the FURY improved the record to 2-2-0 while the Voltage fell to 2-5-1.

The FURY travel to Rhode Island and Cape Cod this weekend in two marquee matches against a struggling club in Rhode Island and the division leaders in Cape Cod. The FURY next play at home July 28th & 29th where they entertain Long Island (Sat. June 28 @ 6pm) and Rhode Island (Sun. June 29 @ 3pm). Both games take place at the Algonquin Soccer Complex - Tickets are available online at www.ottawafury.com or by calling 613.235.3879.

FURY Undefeated Streak Ends on Stormy Day in Ottawa

The Ottawa FURY (now 2-1-0) W-League squad who entered Sunday's game against the Toronto Lady Lynx (now 6-0-1) with an impressive 21-regular season game undefeated streak fell prey to the Lynx in a game that was delay over two hours on a very stormy day in Ottawa.

In the 18th minute, the Lynx counter-attacked after the FURY lost possession. The strong Lynx striker Brittany Bisnott held off the FURY defence and blazed a strong swerving shot past FURY keeper Diaz into the top of the net. The FURY equalized in the 33rd minute after a throw-in near half led to Rachael Axon springing Sarah Sample deep on the right side of the box. With the keeper closing in she smartly cut the ball back to the edge of the six yard box where Shay Powell scored from close range. The goal seemed to spur on the FURY and Sarah Sample almost got to a high ball as she collided heavily with Kuhar-Pitters in the Lynx net. An evenly matched first half ended all square at one goal apiece.

The second half began as the first with the spirited and hard working Lynx side causing the FURY back line problems in playing the ball out of defence. The Lynx forced the FURY into turning the ball over repeatedly and this would cost the Fury dear in the 56th minute when a collision between Bisnott and FURY keeper Kimberley Diaz resulted in an unsuccessful scramble to clear the loose ball out of danger by the FURY back line. Eventually the ball fell to Stefania Morra who shot the ball into the open net to regain the lead for Toronto.

Ottawa’s best chance came in the 84th minute when substitute Christina Julien hit the post with a cracking shot and Emma Mattsson was unable to convert the rebound. The Fury pushed forward in search of an equalizer but were unable to convert.

The Lynx enjoyed a rare victory over their arch-rivals as the FURY lost a regular season game for the first time in 21 games since they lost away to the Hamilton Avalanche on June 25th, 2006. The FURY outshot the visiting Lynx by a count of 13 to 3.

The FURY are home again on Wednesday evening as the host the Vermont Lady Voltage at 8:30 looking to work on putting together another lengthy undefeated streak.

FURY Men record first victory in Storm-delayed Match

A succession of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning was the real winner in a game that was called by the match officials in the 48th minute after two interruptions due to lightning. The FURY (now 1-2-0) were leading New Hampshire (now 3-2-3) 1-0 at the time the game was called by virtue of a headed goal from Paul Kihara scored in the 3rd minute.
The FURY got off to a flying start when in the third minute Matt Pecheone crossed from the right wing to the far post for Paul Kihara to score with a header. New Hampshire had barely touched the ball much less gotten into the game and found themselves down 1-0. Soon after the opening goal, the match officials sent the players back into the safety of the dressing room as lightning repeatedly struck in the vicinity of the stadium.
Both teams returned to the field after a lengthy delay with the FURY continuing to prove threatening. The match developed into a physical tussle between two evenly matched teams. In a first half full of stoppages, the Fury conceded 10 fouls and the Phantoms 20. The score at half was FURY 1 New Hampshire 0.
They only managed a mere 3 minutes of play into the second half at which point officials sent players to the dressings rooms for a second and final time due to lightning in the vicinity of the stadium. After a further prolonged delay and a subsequent attempt to restart the game had to be aborted, the officials made the difficult decision to call the game with the Fury leading by a goal to nil. An unsatisfactory end to the game for both sides and for the fans watching the game.
The FURY continue their home stand Wednesday night against the Vermont Voltage at 6pm as part of another double-header with the W-League FURY playing at 8:30pm.

FURY Soar Past Gryphons

In their first ever meeting the Ottawa Fury (now 2-0-0) scored an emphatic 6-0 victory over the London Gryphons (now 2-3-0) at the Algonquin Soccer Complex on Saturday evening. The win extends the FURY's regular season undefeated streak to 21 games. The Gryphons had no answer to an onslaught from Ottawa who scored four second half goals to add to two markers in the first half.
Unlike their opening game which saw the FURY edge Western Mass with a goal late into extra time, Emma Mattsson put Ottawa in front in the 2nd minute converting on a perfect through ball from Ashly Kennedy. Sarah Sample made in 2-0 in the 17th minute with a low rasping shot into the bottom left corner off an pass from Shay Powell
The FURY took complete charge in the second half adding four more goals to the score sheet. Despite London coming close in the 58th minute which could have turned the tide of this game, Kimberly Diaz was equal to the task and her teammates rewarded her with goals coming from Shay Powell (66th minute), a second from Sarah Sample (70th minute), Ciara McCormack (75th minute) off a perfect 30-yard strike and Adrienne Ruhe-Lischke (85th minute) to round out the scoring.
The FURY continue their homestand on Sunday against the Toronto Lady Lynx @ 6pm and again on Wednesday evening against the Vermont Lady Voltage @ 8:30pm.
